“Itch. Scratch. I consider ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY one of the five greatest American films ever made. I couldn't have wished a better capstone to three decades in the rackets. For 20 years I championed its restoration, pointing Criterion toward better or more complete elements. Since joining UCLA ten years ago I battled diligently for a proper restoration and preservation. Thank to the Film Foundation and the Lucas/Hobson Family Foundation, that dream has become a reality with partners Janus Films, the Museum of Modern Art and the Library of Congress. The best and most complete nitrate materials in the world were used, including the heavily truncated and damaged camera negative. Here is the premiere screening at Roundabout, Burbank CA. RIGHT TO LEFT: colorist Greg Garvin, UCLA preservationist Miki Shannon, Criterion producer Karen Stetler, UCLA Head of Preservation Scott MacQueen, Roundabout producer Vincent Pirrozi, UCLA curator Todd Weiner. A 35mm Digitial Intermediate is underway at Fotokem, and it should become available in the near feature as a DCP, perhaps Criterion Channel, perhaps a new Blu-ray. Watch this space.” Scott MacQueen
