Roundabout is excited to welcome Greg Faust to the team. Greg is a seasoned Audio professional with over 25 years’ experience in post-production and comes to us by way of Netflix. He has spent the last 2.5 years cultivating high profile productions for Netflix International Dubbing and previously had an extended stay with Deluxe, mixing localized blockbuster titles for Fox and DreamWorks. Leaning toward Localization has been a steady career path for him, bringing his dubbing expertise and excellence to all projects. As a Re-recording Mixer for many years, Greg has paved a foundation with key elements of audio in dubbing all languages, preserving realism, cultural awareness and creativity. Assembling great teams is another way Greg will extend his excellence to many projects running throughout our localization work flows. Roundabout has amazing creative and technical resources to utilize during the dubbing process and our newly fitted stages are perfect environments to create amazing dub-mixes.

APRIL 2020

We welcome Trent Johnson to Roundabout. Trent has over 30 years of experience color grading features and television shows for a plethora of leading directors and cinematographers. With great expertise, he makes their visions become a reality.

As a child Trent binge-watched TV shows and movies and developed a love of classic Hollywood. He approaches his projects with the hope that his work will be seen for decades as well.

In high school Trent bought a Super 8 camera and began making movies. He later majored in film production at San Diego State University and started his career at Complete Post in Hollywood as a colorist and editor. Trent later went on to work as a digital colorist at Encore Video, Technicolor Creative Services, Sony ColorWorks and Deluxe Media before joining the Roundabout team.

Trent has hundreds of credits color timing feature films and television. Some recent features include horror hits Slender Man and The Possession of Hannah Grace, as well as comedies Overboard and Ted 2. He also has a love for animation, having worked on the original Disney TV classics like Winnie the Pooh and Gummi Bears through to the recent features The Smurfs and The Emoji Movie.

OCTOBER 2019

We welcome Narbeh Tatoussian to Roundabout. He as over 22 years experience as a colorist and has collaborated with various film makers and set high standards with his knowledge and expertise. Narbeh started his career at Modern, and recently he served as Senior Colorist, at Sim International and prior to SIM was the Senior Colorist, Producer and a member of the Executive team at Blacklist Digital.

He has been a Colorist on hundreds of feature films and television shows. He has worked with award winning Directors such as Jordan Vogt-Roberts ("Kings of Summer", "Kong: Skull Island") and John Dahl ("Rounders", "Marvel's Jessica Jones"). He has also worked with award-winning Cinematographers such as Rohn Schmidt (“Step Up - High Water”), Russell Carpenter ("Ant-Man", "Titanic"), David Armstrong ("Saw - Saw VI) and Shelly Johnson ("Captain America", "The Wolfman", "Jurassic Park III").

He has also colored various music videos for Artists such as Will I am,Akon, Chris brown, Kid Rock, New Kids On The Block, Fergie, Kendrick Lamar, Jason Derulo, Trey Songs and DNCE.

Narbeh has Produced 16 feature films including "Tragedy Girls" , “Band of Robbers" (On Netflix), "First Girl I Loved" (Official Sundance Film Festival Selection) and "The Neighbor" (from the writer of "Saw IV"-"Saw VI").

Gary Bourgeois joins South Lake Audio Services

South Lake Audio Services is extremely pleased to welcome Emmy award winning, re-recording mixer Gary C. Bourgeois. Gary's list of credits covers the gamut of content including music videos and documentaries early in his career, to Pretty in Pink, Back to School,

Roundabout West is proud to announce, in collaboration with Sony Pictures, that the 4K digital restoration of None Shall Escape (d. Andre De Toth, 1944) will have its world premiere at the TCM Classic Film Festival.  None Shall Escape, released during World War II, is a compelling commentary on the dangers of not recognizing the rise of fascism in Poland and Germany in the 1920's.  
The recently completed 4k restoration Fail Safe (d. Sidney Lumet, 1964), which made its restoration world premiere at The Berlin International Film Festival in February 2018 is also making it's U.S. premiere on the opening night of the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood.  
 
Color correction of these features was completed by Sheri Eisenberg using a FilmLight Baselight and a 4k Christie projector.  Roundabout offers a state of the art facility to bring new or classic features from the original negative to the screen, be it digital cinema, HDR our new Samsung display.

Samsung today announced that its line of 4K LED theatrical screens are now called Onyx, which is meant to evoke the picture quality of its pure black capabilities. The screens, six of which exist now around the world, stand at 34-feet and 4096 x 2160 resolution, providing a richer, crisper picture than standard 2K projection. They’re capable of displaying 2K, 4K, 3D, and HDR images. Last week, Samsung officially unveiled its first US location for Onyx at Pacific Theatres Winnetka in Chatsworth, California, just north of Los Angeles.

While the screen is smaller than the standard 45- to 65-foot projection screens at most movie theaters, the Onyx LED monitor takes advantage of the fact that it’s not relying on projection technology. It is essentially a giant 4K TV screen built into a movie theater wall. Samsung says it works with theaters to design the seating arrangement and the custom JBL sound system to maximize the viewing and audio quality experience. And unlike projection, the screen also works well in partial light, which Samsung hopes will make it a viable option for dine-in theatrical experiences and even e-sports and other live gaming events, as viewers won’t need to sit in complete darkness.

Samsung’s LED cinema screens have been rebranded as Onyx

In a live demo of the screen at the Pacific Theaters Winnetka last Friday, in which we saw Ready Player One on the Onyx screen, it was admittedly hard without a side-by-side comparison to tell the difference between the LED cinema screen and a standard projection one. It was much easier to discern the quality when standing closer to a smaller, half-sized Onyx screen Samsung provided to post-production studio Roundabout. The studio is now making use of the screen in its color correction, HDR grading, and other film editing work now increasingly focused on helping studios put out higher-quality digital images.

The Next Generation of Cinema

Available in variations extending between 16.4ft in height and 33.8ft in width, the Samsung Onyx display accommodates any venue configuration while delivering visual quality, technical performance and reliability beyond that of traditional projector-based operations. With the 4K model earning validation as the world’s first Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI)-certified theater display, the Samsung Onyx translates the combination of advanced LED and High Dynamic Range (HDR) picture quality to lifelike big screen content.

World’s First 2K Screen for Post Production

Samsung additionally has forged a partnership with Hollywood-based post-production company Roundabout to develop specialized Onyx-ready HDR content. “We’re passionate about helping our clients create extraordinary images at Roundabout and we believe this emissive display technology will help

redefine the cinema experience,” said Jerome Dewhurst, Senior Color Scientist at Roundabout. “Our color-grading service for the Samsung Onyx screen allows DPs, Directors and colorists to craft images with incredible tonal detail that has previously been practically impossible using projection. For example, it will be possible to create scenes with extremely dark, yet still very detailed shadows, un-polluted by a theater’s exit lights. It will also be possible to create shots with a luminance range that can look much more life-like, allowing for a more immersive effect in the theater. Ultimately, we have a much larger gamut in which we can work, and it will be entirely down to the creatives as to how much of that they wish to utilize when they master their film with us.”

The evolution of the Samsung Onyx screen has also inspired production equipment businesses to refine their equipment to welcome a more advanced picture for filmmakers. At CinemaCon, Samsung additionally will highlight its partnerships with production equipment businesses, such as the new research and development initiative performed in conjunction with Arnold & Richter Cine Technik (ARRI), a Munich-based designer and manufacturer of specialized motion picture camera and lighting systems, to create Onyx-optimized content. Samsung also is collaborating with GDC Technology, a leading global provider of end-to-end digital cinema solutions, to develop Onyx-compatible cinema servers.

Samsung also recently announced partnerships with Golden Screen Cinemas – the largest cinema company in Malaysia, with 35 venues and 328 screens throughout the nation – and Cineplexx Cinemas – the largest cinema company in Austria, with 171 screens nationwide - to bring the Onyx screen to movie- goers in each country. The first locally revamped Samsung Onyx theaters are expected to open in Kuala Lumpur and Vienna, respectively, later this year.

Taking place April 23-26, 2018 at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, CinemaCon is the official convention of the National Association of Theater Owners. Article in Display Daily reviewing Roundabout's new Onyx Cinema Screen made by Samsung:

I had a chance to visit the first U.S.-based post production facility and commercial theaters in Los Angeles just prior to CinemaCon – both featuring Samsung’s LED technology. These are important milestones for Samsung and the visit highlighted the potential for the technology.

It also highlighted the need to develop an HDR cinema solution acceptable to filmmakers, Hollywood studios and production facilities, exhibitors and manufacturers.

The post production house is Roundabout with the new 2K LED screen located in its Santa Monica facility (they also have a much larger facility in Burbank).
